Hiring a digital agency is one of the highest-leverage decisions a founder will make. Hire the right one, and you gain a scalable growth engine. Hire the wrong one, and you burn capital, lose 6 to 12 months of momentum, and end up with a messy architecture you have to rebuild anyway.

The Pitch vs. The Reality

The agency model is inherently challenging. Many agencies operate on a 'pitch and bait' model: the charismatic founder or senior strategist pitches the account, wins the business, and immediately hands the execution over to a junior account manager with 6 months of experience.

This is why the number one complaint founders have about agencies is a lack of strategic proactivity. You end up managing the agency, rather than the agency managing your growth.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

  • Guaranteed Rankings: Anyone guaranteeing page one of Google is lying to you. Search is volatile. You guarantee the output (the work), you project the outcome (the traffic).
  • Proprietary CMS Platforms: If an agency insists on building your site on their own custom, proprietary CMS, run. They are locking you into a hostage situation. When you want to leave, you can't take your site with you.
  • Vanity Metrics over Revenue: If the monthly report focuses heavily on 'Impressions' and 'Bounce Rate' but rarely mentions 'Leads', 'CPA', or 'Pipeline', they are hiding behind vanity metrics.

How to Vet an Agency

Before signing a 12-month retainer, ask these three questions:

1. Who exactly will be executing the work?

Demand to meet the specific developer, designer, or SEO strategist who will be working on your account week-to-week.

2. What happens if we want to leave in 6 months?

Understand the offboarding process. You must retain ownership of all accounts (Google Analytics, Ads, Domain, Hosting, Codebase).

3. What does success look like in Month 3 vs. Month 6?

A good agency will give you a realistic roadmap. Month 3 might be technical fixes and foundation laying. Month 6 should be measurable pipeline growth. If they can't articulate this timeline, they don't have a plan.

At Maroon Pixel, we operate as an extension of your team. You have direct access to the senior strategists doing the work, full ownership of your assets, and a transparent roadmap mapped to revenue, not just traffic.
